Apple has its own official lineup of accessories, which includes not only AirPods but also iPhone cases. And they’re great, all designed to work together seamlessly. But over the past few months, I decided to give a set of Beats accessories a try.
After spending quite a while testing the new Powerbeats Fit alongside Beats’ Rugged Case for the iPhone 17 Pro Max, I’ve come to an unexpected conclusion. My new favorite gym accessories don’t have an Apple logo on them at all.
Beats solved problems Apple didn’t
There’s a reason I don’t usually wear my AirPods Pro to the gym anymore, and it has very little to do with sound quality.
The AirPods Pro are excellent earbuds. Their noise cancellation remains among the best in the industry, Transparency Mode is still something competitors struggle to match, and they integrate so well with the Apple ecosystem that it’s easy to forget they’re even there. Outside the gym, they’re almost always my first choice.
AirPods are great, but the Powerbeats Fit are a better options for working out.

At the gym, however, it’s a different story. Even with the right ear tips, AirPods can feel a little uncomfortable depending on my movements. Not only that, but I always find myself adjusting them or checking to see if they’re still properly secured in my ears during intense workouts.
Powerbeats Fit eliminate that distraction entirely. The flexible wingtips help keep each earbud in place, and after a few minutes, I simply stop thinking about them.
I wrote last year that the Powerbeats Fit are probably the best companion for the iPhone 17 Pro based on color and comfort, and after spending even more time with them, I still believe that. They deliver Apple’s best features, such as quick pairing, auto device switching, Find My support, and Spatial Audio, while providing a secure fit that AirPods weren’t designed to offer. Plus they’re $50 cheaper than AirPods Pro.
The trade-off is obvious. They’re bulkier than AirPods Pro, and I probably wouldn’t choose them for a long flight or an afternoon working at a coffee shop. But that’s exactly why I think Apple was smart not to position them as AirPods replacements. They are designed for a specific purpose, and that’s what makes them so good.

I underestimated the Beats Rugged Case
The biggest surprise for me wasn’t the earbuds, but the iPhone case. I’ve never been particularly drawn to cases, especially rugged ones, because they usually make modern smartphones look unnecessarily bulky. One of the reasons I use my iPhone caseless is that I appreciate its design, and putting it in a case has never really appealed to me.
The Beats Rugged Case doesn’t completely eliminate this trade-off, but I’ve found that it’s quite convenient in certain situations, especially when I’m at the gym.

Yes, it’s noticeably thicker than Apple’s Silicone Case, but it also feels substantially more reassuring when being held. The textured sides provide considerably more grip, which matters more than I realized once my hands become sweaty halfway through a workout. Setting the phone down on gym equipment or tossing it into a backpack alongside a metal water bottle suddenly becomes much less stressful.
What impressed me most, though, was how little it feels like a third-party accessory. Just like Apple’s cases, it supports MagSafe, and everything works as expected, from the buttons to Camera Control. It features its own sapphire layer for seamless integration, rather than relying on a simple cutout around the button.
It sounds like a small detail, but it’s one of those touches that immediately makes the case feel like it belongs in Apple’s own lineup. Plus, the colors are really nice, and I love mine in Sierra (Cosmic) Orange.
Beats has finally found its place inside Apple
For years after Apple acquired Beats, the company’s identity felt somewhat unclear. AirPods quickly became Apple’s flagship audio brand, leaving Beats to occupy an increasingly vague position alongside it. There were excellent products, but it wasn’t always obvious why they existed separately.
That distinction feels much clearer today. AirPods have become Apple’s everyday earbuds. They’re designed for commuting, working, traveling, and fitting seamlessly into daily life. Beats, meanwhile, increasingly feels like Apple’s brand for people who prioritize durability and stability.

The introduction of products like the Rugged Case reinforces that idea. Beats is no longer just making headphones. It’s building accessories that complement an active lifestyle in ways Apple’s own accessories often don’t.
I don’t expect everyone to replace their AirPods Pro with Powerbeats Fit or swap Apple’s Silicone Case for a rugged alternative. Outside the gym, I still use both Apple products regularly. But every time I pack my gym bag, I instinctively reach for the same two accessories instead.
